Your Book is the Best Context You Can Give AI

Dr. Michael Housman is an OG of the AI world. He started researching machine learning in his 20s, around the time most of us were just discovering the internet. Today he runs an AI consultancy and speaks regularly on stages worldwide. So when Michael talks about AI, I listen.

Recently, Michael wrote a newsletter about how he had been using the Zapier app along with an AI integration to skim the internet for articles on the topics he cares about and draft content for him. The first versions worked, technically. The bots produced tidy summaries. The trouble was, they read like generic summaries. They didn't sound like him, and they didn't filter well for the subjects he desired.

Then Michael made a move that changed everything. He fed his AI agent a copy of his book, Future Proof.

The difference, he said, was striking. The bot stopped summarizing and started filtering the whole internet through his frameworks. It flagged articles about the ideas in his book, and in writing, it surfaced aspects of his voice such as short sentences and a dry sense of humor. 

As Michael put it, the AI stopped acting like a research assistant and started acting like a colleague who had read everything he’d ever written and knew what he’d find useful.

So what does this mean for you? In our increasingly AI-powered world, your book is the foundation of everything.

Once you’ve written a book, you possess an entire book’s worth of information about yourself, in your style, with your voice, telling your stories. And it’s ready to feed to your chatbot. This changes what happens downstream. LLMs are predictive machines that run entirely on context, so the more context you give them, the better they perform. Your book makes your chatbot more human. More you.

This is a brand-new answer to the oldest question I get: Why should I write a book? For decades, I’ve said, “Write a book to build your credibility, legacy, and reach, as well as the joy and healing inherent in the process.” All this is still true. Now you can add another reason to the list: Your book becomes the source code for every AI tool you'll ever use. Without it, your AI sounds like everyone else’s AI. With it, it’s an excellent research assistant.
