What Happens When Google Radically Changes its Algorithm?

Jul 13, 2025

Over the past 3 years since ChatGPT came out, AI has begun to infiltrate every aspect of our lives. Now, AI has caused Google to radically change the way it responds to your online queries.

And when Google changes, everything changes. (Google still owns 90% of web search traffic!)

So, what does this mean for you?

Instead of getting a list of responses with blue hyperlinks to the original source material (with “trusted” sources such as The New York Times and the Mayo Clinic at the top), Google will simply deliver an AI-generated answer to your query.

The problem? We have no idea how this will impact your website, author page on Amazon, blog, or web presence. And we don’t know how it will affect book recommendations.

Let’s say you’re looking for a new book to read. You prefer spy thrillers set in alien worlds.

It’s possible that the AI search will guide people toward the most popular authors out there. Books that are already bestsellers. If this is the case, Google will reinforce smaller and smaller circles, making it even harder for the rest of us.

But… we can be hopeful that Google’s new AI search engine might also suggest some up-and-coming authors, unknown books that have gotten praised in the press or by bloggers or even on TikTok. In this case, perhaps it will give those of us who are just getting started in our writing more of a chance.

Maybe?

Tell me your thoughts on AI-generated search.

Tip of the Week: Google Yourself

When is the last time you Googled yourself?

Check out where your website, your Substack, your social media or LinkedIn profile ranks. Does it show up on Page 1? Do you like what you see?

If not, spend some time editing the sites that are out of date. I’ve searched myself before and found information about jobs I held years ago!

Quote of the Week

Google says a new AI tool on its search engine will rejuvenate the internet. Others predict an apocalypse for websites. One thing is clear: the current chapter of online history is careening towards its end.
