Weekly Tips for Writing & Publishing Your Bestselling Book

The End-All, Be-All Starter Guide to Publishing

Jan 07, 2026

My new go-to line when anyone wants to ask me anything about publishing is going to be, “Read this article. Then we’ll talk.”

Kevin Kelly, the founding editor of Wired magazine, prolifically publishes books. He has had several  New York Times bestsellers published by the Big 5 publishing houses. He has self-published photography books. He has done Kickstarters to fund his book.

Here he brilliantly distills the basics: How to try for an agent, what an agent does, what a Big 5 publisher does, how to self publish a regular book, how to self publish a beautiful art book, the advantages and disadvantages of each.

My biggest takeaway was this:

A second option for on-demand printing of standard books with black and white texts, as well as books with color illustration, is Lulu. Their photo/art books are a bit cheaper than Blurb. They are very competitive with standard text-based books. Most importantly, Lulu integrates with your own customer list, so you own your audience.

The article is both thorough and easy to read. What more could you want?
